There was no need to get up early. Everything was under control. Well, everything except my brain which switched on at 06:45 - and that was it. No lie-in today.
Once suitable caffeinated we started to potter. There were potatoes and carrots to peel. This threw my spreadsheet which had assumed "just in time" preparation - not "prepare hours in advance". The prep was done and the spreadsheet was adapted accordingly. Spare chairs were retrieved and a table was delivered from Zoe's. Tables were laid, snacks were put out, and everything was under control.
Kim and Jon arrived first, soon followed by Zoe and Darren, Ellie and Maddie, and Lorraine and Russ. Once drinks were served, there was an initial pass at the opening of presents. There were so many presents stacked up that we would have to rest, eat lunch, and then return to the chaos for a second pass. (Several 44-ton trucks were lining up by the side gate to collect the discarded wrapping paper and boxes).
Lunch seemed to go down very well. Darren and Zoe had prepared a starter of prawns, crayfish, and lobster. This was followed by the traditional turkey, ham, roast potatoes, parsnips, carrots, peas, and Brussels sprouts. I think we gave up at this point, vowing to return for dessert when we had rested.
By about 20:00, everyone had drifted away, leaving Diane and me to a quiet couple of hours in front of the TV.
It had been a lovely Christmas Day.
