Patience

There is something deeply calming about having patience. For the Gorse Fox, patience is a virtue that goes only so far. It then switches in a nano-second to fury. Today, that nano-second is approaching.

He got up earl to edit our scheduled Ocado order. Ocado would not allow him onto the site, saying there were now delivery slots available. This should not be a problem as he had a slot and was merely wishing to edit the shopping list. This carried on for a couple of hours before he decided to leave it and recast the list onto his phone for a trip to Sainsbury's.

He then returned to the outstanding task of cancelling the trip to Jamaica. They allowed him to WhatsApp and SMS - which he did to no effect. Eventually, he found a working phone number. He dialled in and was told he may have to wait up to three hours. He is patient. He could wait. He entered the booking reference and waited. The music started. He got on with some emails. He read Facebook. He returned to the task of selecting photos for a future photo book. He went and prepared some vegetables for the soup at lunchtime. He watched over Ellie while Urban-cub was on a conference call. He noticed that the Silver Vixen had got into Ocado and helped by reading out the shopping list to her. He walked around the house. He read the papers online.

After four hours and ten minutes the music stopped, there was a click, "Hello, hello" he called. The line went dead. They had cut him off. That nano-second was coming close. He picked up another phone and called the number again. He got the message "The number is busy, please try again later". That nano-second is getting very, very close!

Apocalypse

After the excitement of the Birthday yesterday, Ellie has been “challenging” today. She was like all Four Horseman of the Apocalypse rolled into one!

It has been fairly quiet, other than that.   There were the usual household chores and The Gorse Fox ordered a framed print of well-loved photo. Urban-Cub did some “crafts” with Ellie in a brief moment of calm and we have now got a cardboard sun nestling in the window for passing children to count.

Three today

Today was Ellie’s third birthday. She was meant to be with Pistol Pete overnight, but because of a suspected case of COVID-19 at the prison, he is now ensuring that he is isolating from Ellie. We did, however, ensure that we had several video calls with him throughout the day, and he even read Ellie a bedtime story over the video, at the end of the day.

We had kept the blinds closed so that she couldn’t see into the Orangery when she first came down. It finally dawned on her that the blinds were closed and when she pushed them aside, mayhem ensured.

She saw the balloons, the banner, the wigwam, the pile of presents, and the cards. She was so excited. We had a couple of hours of frantic excitement, particularly when Urban-Cub brought in her pink bicycle from the garage. We ended up going up and down the hall and round the kitchen. The pedals still seem a bit of a mystery to her, but why worry when Mummy, Nana, or Bumpa can pull her around!

During the afternoon we set up a “Zoom” call with the families from Buckingham, and Cousteau-Cub and the Coventry Hobbit. The Gorse Fox used Apple's screen mirroring to throw the video up onto the big TV and we set all the participants up in a gallery view so that we could see everyone at once. Cousteau-cub had a few problems at first, but when she changed from her laptop to her phone, it was fine. This worked very well, though Ellie became completely tongue-tied for the duration and just ran around.

It was a lovely day, but though she went to bed without a murmur, she did disturb a few times early the night.

It's all in the timing

The Gorse Fox spent some time first thing today trying to master the intricacies of the gimbal for the iPhone. Unfortunately his timing wasn't quite up to scratch and he managed to launch the iPhone across the kitchen table. This collided with a full cup of tea and the resulting mayhem blessed the Silver Vixen with an unexpected head-to-foot shower. Fortunately, the tea had cooled. As she went off to change, the Gorse Fox set about drying the floor, the table, the chairs and everything else that had been affected.

Not a good start.

While Urban-Cub and Ellie were getting going the Gorse Fox returned to his study and completed the compilation of the photo book. A further check late in the afternoon saw some final amendments and the book was dispatched for printing. The discount voucher knocked 19 pound off the price, so it was worth completing on time.

At lunchtime, a trip to Sainsbury's was necessary. There were a few items that were needed for Ellie's birthday tomorrow... cards, and a cake being the most significant. (Urban-Cub had ordered a cake from a local baker, but she had gone into isolation and only contacted Urban-Cub yesterday to say she wasn't going to bake it - Urban-Cub was suitable impressed).

Sainsbury's was managing a queuing system. This kept shoppers 2 metres apart in the queue, and operated a one in, one out, policy for access to the store.

The Gorse Fox joined the end of the queue. This was round the side of the store. It moved at a steady pace and he was inside after about 20 minutes. His timing was impeccable by this time of day. When he left, the queue stretched all the way up round the car park and he suspects that was taking a good 45 minutes, at least, to complete.

Snap

The Gorse Fox was delighted with the neighbourhood response to "Clap for the NHS" event last night. Virtually all the houses in the Crescent participated and in the distance we could hear cheering and clapping from all over the estate. At this strange time it is important that we thank those who are taking care of the sick and let them know that their sacrifice and their efforts are appreciated.

Yet another lovely bright day today. With Urban-Cub at home, the Silver Vixen was able to spend a bit more time in the garden. As Ellie now has her own gardening gloves, she was keen to get involved and help. It was sweet watching her wander round and drag the little kneeler with her. The Silver Vixen obviously supervised throughout the process.

The Gorse Fox spent some more time compiling the photo book. All of 2003 is now in place and he's made a start on 2004. Another hour or so and he should be ready to send it off for printing. Today, however, he is going a bit boss-eyed with it all, so will finish it tomorrow.

The Gorse Fox observes that it is perfectly reasonable for people to take exercise once a day, or to take their dog for a walk. He got together with Ellie and has come up with a plan.

We now have a dog to walk and won't have to worry about a pooper-scooper.

Chasing Rainbows

It has been another lovely day with almost cloudless skies. There is a very cool wind, however. Urban-cub has a late shift at the airport today, but that will be her last shift for a week due to the transport slow down and stay home advice.

While the Silver Vixen got Ellie bathed and dressed the Gorse Fox spent some time in the study compiling the photos for 2002 in the latest photo book. There is a 20% discount at present, so if the Gorse Fox can complete the book by Monday it should be a significant saving.

Once Ellie was "in full swing" the Gorse Fox was dragged into the garden to have a tea party on the deck, then to play ball, then to chase her around the garden. This took us up to lunchtime. After lunch we try to encourage "quiet time" - this is as much for us as it is for her! She managed to sleep for a while, then the Gorse Fox took her out for a walk.

Again we walked down to the lake to see the ducks, then walked around the lake.

As we went, we watched for pictures of rainbows in the windows. We took a different route this time and headed around towards the community centre. This was very fruitful in the rainbow-chasing stakes. By the time we got home, we had seen 26 rainbows and Ellie was delighted that she had Grandpa handy to do the counting (and to carry her on his shoulders for part of the way).

Duck Soup

It is another lovely day with bright warm sunshine, but it is very chilly in the shade.

We had a quiet start. Urban-Cub has a day off today, so there was no rush to get anything done. Once Ellie was washed and dressed it had warmed up enough for the Gorse Fox to be enticed into the garden to sit on the deck with Ellie and do some jigsaw puzzles. He also had the pleasure of chasing her, and being chased by her, round and round and all over the place. The other distraction was her swing. Urban-Cub got on with some laundry, and the Silver Vixen did some tidying and dead-heading in the garden.

At lunchtime the Coventry Hobbit turned up to retrieve their bike. Unfortunately, though he could remember the combination code for the lock, we couldn't get it to release. In the end the Gorse Fox dug out some bolt-cutters from the garage and the bike was free. The Coventry Hobbit, furloughed from his job as a chef in the pub, has managed to get work at the local Morrisons. He had an induction session today and starts for real tomorrow.

After lunch Ellie was playing up a bit so the Gorse Fox decided to take her for a walk to give everyone a break and let her run off some steam. We had explained that the play-parks were locked and couldn't be used but she insisted on checking herself. Satisfied, she then headed to spot where we feed the ducks. Though we had some duck food, neither they, nor Ellie seemed particularly interested. (Maybe that had already had lunch).

We wandered onwards and circumnavigated the lake. We were watching out for picture of rainbows in people's windows. We only saw four (and one of those was ours) but it was a fun I-Spy exercise. Apparently the challenge for next week is meant to be pictures of the sun.

As for the lock-down. The Gorse Fox saw very few people out and about. Those he did see were in small family groups and everyone keeping their distance from one another. Old Bill reported that Sainsbury's were controlling a well-spaced queue of customers waiting to enter. Inside the store they had limited the numbers and it was quite easy to shop.

Virtual Separation

It was another lovely day - a little chilly in the shade or the wind, but lovely in the sun.

The first task for the day was to contact Virgin and cancel the Jamaica trip. The Gorse Fox would rather the money sat in his account rather than Virgin's, and it's clear we would not be travelling when planned.

Under the current recommendations you are allowed out for one session of exercise, or to attend the doctor or pharmacy. The Gorse Fox had a prescription to deliver so he made use of this to get exercise and deliver the prescription to the surgery. While he was out he saw a total of 5 dog walkers, 2 people carrying shopping, one jogger, and two couple out walking. People are clearly taking the "stay at home" advice in this area.

This afternoon has been spent nursing our virtual position in the Ocado queue (trusting the other 43369 people in the queue are staying at least 2 virtual metres away from us). It has been a couple of hours so far and at one point our position in the queue seemed to leap back up by 5,000, but we're now down to 17,432 so may finally be able to edit our default order before bedtime.

We heard from Cousteau-cub this morning. Her broadband is back online thank goodness.

Cancelling

A lovely blue sky again today, but a cold wind prevents us from sitting out for long. The Orangery, however, is wonderfully warm and bright.

The Gorse Fox and Ellie spent some time playing in the Orangery this morning. He was trying to keep things to a small subset of toys, but Ellie was intent on spreading out. Having said that, she was very good and cheerful.

The Gorse Fox finally got an email from Virgin Travel today. It explains that there are several options open to us, but these do not include our scheduled holiday. We have yet to decide which option we will take, but we'll discuss this later.

For now, what it does mean is that the various ancillary services we had booked can all be cancelled. The Gorse Fox has spent the last hour sorting through each of these and sending cancellation notices and requesting refunds. So that's: transfers to/from Gatwick, the hotel room in Gatwick the night before travel, the VIP Meet and Greet service on arrival and departure in Jamaica, and the luxury private transfers to/from the resort. Now he just has to wait and check that all of these are confirmed and refunded.

Meanwhile, back in Chichester, Cousteau-Cub is meant to be working from home but her broadband has failed. A line test implies the problem is on their line rather than the service as a whole. Because she is in a high-risk group, however, BT won't send an engineer for at least 3 weeks. Checkmate. Let's hope the WiFi hotspot through her phone has sufficient bandwidth to provide cover.

Mothers' Day

Lovely sunny day today. Urban-Cub and the Silver Vixen had their Mother’s’ Day cards when they got up and after breakfast the Gorse Fox settled down on the floor with Ellie and her grown-up Lego. While she kept moving all the bricks around, the Gorse Fox constructed a digger for her. This is clearly the start of something fun and during the afternoon, Jake (who had come over to see Urban-Cub) constructed several further models for her.

By lunchtime it was warm enough to sit outside. We unwrapped all the garden furniture after the winter and Urban-Cub and Ellie settled down on a mat to play with some jigsaw puzzles.

The Silver Vixen and Gorse Fox settled down with a rum and coke, and a gin and tonic, and imagined we were in Jamaica as Ellie charged around with one toy or another.

Cousteau-Cub vide-called the Silver Vixen for Mothers' Day. She is socially distancing because of her compromised immune system... but made the most of the good weather to take Tyson (the dog) for a walk with the Coventry Hobbit.

GPS Tags

The combination of Canon PowerShot SX740 HS and the Canon Camera Connect (CCC) app should, in theory, be a match made in heaven. Firstly, you don’t need special hardware in the camera to handle GPS logging, and secondly your phone can be used as a remote control and GPS location source for the camera. The problem is that the instructions aren’t really as clear as they might be, and there is a temptation to race ahead with various settings that seem sensible, but actually confuse matters. For the sake of his sanity the Gorse Fox has decided to document the settings and setup that seems to work.

  1. Download the CCC app to your phone, set up WiFi and Bluetooth connections between the camera and phone. The Gorse Fox also connected the camera via the home WiFi access point (in addition to the built-in WiFi in the camera).
  2. Check that you can control the camera over Bluetooth.
  3. On the camera menu ensure GPS Settings via mobile are Enabled; in the CCC app ensure Location Information is active. Do not bother switching on Location logging.
  4. Switch the camera on and press the “Info” key twice, it should show at the bottom that Bluetooth is on, and to the right that GPS locations are enabled. Take a test picture. Return to the CCC app and select “Images on Camera”, then when the images are shown on the screen press the “Option Gear” in the top right and ensure that the photos are set with GPS location enabled on transfer. That’s it… you only have to do it the once.

Having got all of that sorted, the Gorse Fox decided to get some exercise and headed out into the sunshine for a walk. His idea was to randomly take a single photo and check that the GPS tag was correctly assigned without any intervention from him. There was brisk, cool wind which kept things from getting too warm. He headed out towards Aldwick, then back towards Bognor Regis and the local football ground. Finally, he looped back along the main road towards home. It was a pleasant 4 miles and it got the blood pumping.

This is the random photo he took. It probably gives a strong clue as to why "The Royal Oak" is known locally as "the Pink Pub".

Isolation

Well, it's not forced isolation. It is isolation due to the fact there was no need to go anywhere today and the weather wasn't exactly conducive to going out. There was a bitter wind and a flat, grey sky.

The Gorse Fox found himself stretched out on the floor in the Orangery playing with Ellie and her Lego. As he instructed her in the finer arts of building, she slowly covered the Gorse Fox in stickers. Urban-cub relieved him and decided that it was time to make some gingerbread men. The Gorse Fox retired to the study and continued the selection of photos for the last year of the next photo book. With that done he started on the compilation of the book itself. So far, he has just got the annual pre-ambles written.

After lunch, Urban-cub had a conference call scheduled regarding the immediate plans for staff at Gatwick during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ellie has a knack of becoming troublesome during phonecalls so the Gorse Fox took her out for a walk. We started at the park, then walked around the lake to the dock where we feed the ducks. The ducks were clearly self-isolating today. None of them turned up even when Ellie shouted "Ducks!".

Panic

You can see that panic is setting in, the wine aisle in Sainsbury’s was decimated, gin was limited to the expensive brands, and large bottles of rum were seriously limited. The Gorse Fox did stop off at Turner’s Pies to buy one of their award-winning steak and cheddar pies. At least the locusts hadn’t got to them yet.

Ellie was taking "social distancing" seriously as she built a train in the kitchen and strapped her toys in so they could all go away.

The Silver Vixen had a Doctor’s appointment this afternoon. The surgery phoned yesterday to ask if the consultation could be conducted by telephone. Well, it seemed obvious really. Of course it could. It saves social contact and saves time for both the Silver Vixen and the Doctor.

Some Good News

The Gorse Fox has just read that the BBC have suspended filming of Eastenders due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Who says all is gloom and doom. There clearly is a silver lining to this particular cloud.

Join the Queue

The Gorse Fox and the Silver Vixen have been regular customers of Ocado for many years. We have a standard delivery slot pre-allocated every week. On Monday/Tuesday we tend to log into the system and amend our standard shopping list to fine-tune it for the current week. Yesterday, the Silver Vixen logged in as usual. Well, not quite "as usual".

Instead of the usual screen, we go a "splash screen" saying that unless you already had an order, forget it, We did, so we didn't. It also said that they are not accepting any new customers at present. Not a problem, we are established customers. Finally, it said we were positioned 15,994 in the queue and it would be about 2 hours wait before we got in to edit our order.

It was interesting watching the queue position count down as it was updated every 15 seconds. In the end, it took about an hour to get to the front of the queue, at which time there were some 17,900 people queued up behind us.

We did our normal shop.

Zombie Apocalypse

It was another lovely day, weather-wise. Urban-Cub took Ellie to the child-minder as she had a day off. The problem there was that by lunchtime the child-minder’s daughter had been sent home from school with a cough so all the children the minder care for were sent home and will not be allowed back for at least two weeks.

The Gorse Fox had a few items needed for today’s supper. He, again, walked into Shripney and wandered into Sainsbury’s. Not a single item that was on his list was available. The shelves were bare. As he wandered back, empty handed, via the checkouts a member of staff apologised that his trip had been in vain. He made it very clear that he did not believe it was her fault, nor her problem. As he pointed it, it was the fault of the knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, single digit IQ morons who I have unnecessarily been panic buying.

He wandered on the M&S. He was luckier there. One item from his list was available. He then headed for Lidl. He has come to the conclusion that Lidl is a portal to the Twilight Zone. As you enter, you start to see life forms shuffling round the aisles the like of which you would never see in the general populace.

The afternoon was spent going through photos for 2003, selecting the best ones for the next photo book.

Kinda Blue

It has been a glorious day. The sun has shone brightly and though it was quite chilly first thing, it has warmed up quite nicely. The Gorse Fox took Ellie across to the childminder in LA. We had a sing-song of nursery rhymes all the way across. Perhaps it's a good thing the windows weren't open! As we passed the railway sidings she chirped up "We could get the train to Mummy's work". The Gorse Fox agreed. The trains stop at Gatwick. Spot on. She went on to explain "we couldn't go by aeroplane because I don't have any big shoes". The Gorse Fox was stumped. He is an experienced air traveller but hadn't realised that the size of his shoes was a determining factor when flying.

Back home, with another coffee tucked away he realised that tonight's Butter Chicken would need some coriander and he was out of stock. Shoes back on and camera tucked under his arm he decided to walk into Shripney as the weather was so nice.

He was surprised, as he crossed the Aldingbourne Rife, at how the field had drained. This time last week, all this view would have looked like a huge lake.

He dropped into Lidl for his shopping. That was a mistake. Not because he couldn't find what he wanted, but rather because of the time spent queueing to pay at the tills.

No news

There is no news, as yet, regarding our trip to Jamaica. The Gorse Fox suspects that there is sufficient time for things to change several times between now and our departure date. It would, however, be nice to have some certainty.

The Gorse Fox was off to football this morning. He would observe that this may become a rare opportunity as rumours of a lock-down for the over-70s would decimate our squad (even though the Gorse Fox wouldn’t actually be in the demographic). Anyway, todays game was tight and ended up with a 7-6 defeat for the Gorse Fox, though he did manage to get one of the goals and hit the post a couple of times. The football centre was very busy today with about 8 or 9 games being played on the outdoor pitches and the supporting parents milling around watching the action in the bright sunshine and cold wind.

Urban-Cub is back from her early shift, and we are expecting Elli back from Pistol Pete in a couple of hours.

Saturday, March 14, 2020

Lazy

It has been a lazy day. The Silver Vixen has a heavy cold so confined her activity to knitting and Urban-Cub has been catching up on her ironing. The Gorse Fox spent most of the morning looking for alternative Spring vacations, on the assumption that our trip does get cancelled. After a lot of web surfing he has come up with several staycation alternatives, should they be needed. A little further afield he also has a shortlist of hotels on Jersey as a backup.

The rest of the the day the Gorse Fox has spent going though the photo library for 2000, 2001, and 2002 looking for the best photos for inclusion in the next photo book, when he starts to compile it. AT first he was worried that some of the photos had been misfiled, but going back to the original CDs, he can see they were correct.

Shut

Well it looks as if our trip to Jamaica may well be in jeopardy. The latest information from the FCO is that Jamaica have restricted visitors from the UK to those who are Jamaican nationals, their children, or people with residential status.

The Gorse Fox and Silver Vixen await contact from our Travel Agent!

It looks like a staycation maybe on the cards.

COVID-19

The worldwide panic is still in full swing over COVID-19. Today the FA and Premiership have announced the suspension of the leagues for the next few weeks. The airports are quiet, the train stations are moderately quiet. People seem to be avoiding crowds. Various cruise lines have cancelled upcoming cruises, ports are being closed to cruise liners.

We are not panicking. We are taking sensible precautions, but we are not panic buying, we are not cancelling holidays, we are not staying in any more than usual. It seems that the Government is taking scientific advice as to the best way forward and, needless to say, everyone else seems to know better.

We have a trip to Jamaica scheduled for a couple of months hence. Hopefully nothing will interfere with it, but as the Gorse Fox's mantra says "adapt and survive". Having said that, we do have to be sensibly cautious, given our age and the state of health.

Drawn out

Ellie is off to spend the weekend with Pistol Pete. The Gorse Fox decided to open up the boxes collected yesterday from Magnets. Out came the first couple of wire basket drawers. The Gorse Fox placed them on the work top and settled down to read the instructions. The Silver Vixen walked in. "They are smaller than expected" she said. The Gorse Fox looked up. He hadn't really noticed. Out came the tape measure... the 400mm drawers were, in fact, 300mm.

He checked the part numbers on the order. Correct.

He checked the brochure. Correct.

How could they be wrong? The Gorse Fox phoned Magnets and explained his dilemma.

Well, it turns out that the 400mm drawers are not 400mm. That measurement refers to the size of the cabinet into which they fit. This then allows for the thickness of the cabinet sides, and the clearance for the hinges. This is NOT explained in the brochure.

They were very good and said he could bring them back and would get a refund. An hour later he was standing in the shop, the refund was being processed and a new order had been submitted for 500mm drawers (which still seem counter-intuitive when the opening is only 467mm).

Basket case

The Gorse Fox was first up this morning. There was a bright blue sky, and bright morning sunshine. It looked lovely. There was a bitterly cold wind, however. Urban-Cub and Ellie were next down, then the Silver Vixen. We had a leisurely breakfast before heading off to various corners of the house to get on with our various morning tasks. The Gorse Fox actually managed to finish the weekly accounts before Ocado turned up, for a change.  (As a rule the arrive just after he opens the spreadsheet).

Urban-Cub had an appointment in Chichester and Ellie stayed with us. We had a couple of errands to run. We nipped along to the local pharmacy then off to Magnet’s (in Chichester) where the Gorse Fox had some wire trays on order. There a six of these trays and Mr Personality, who was manning the desk, grudgingly took our details and murmured that he knew where they were and grunted that he would be back before long. We waited. He took the boxed baskets to the door of the warehouse and told the Gorse Fox “reverse your car up and load them as they are heavy”. It was clear the Gorse Fox had to do as he was told. He reversed up then had to decide which of the pallet trucks had his order. He loaded the (not very) heavy baskets into the car and drove home. These boxed baskets are nestling in the corner of the Orangery waiting for the Gorse Fox to spring into action.

Running about

It was quite bright this morning and very mild. It was a real pleasure to be out playing football on such a pleasant morning. Unfortunately, the Gorse Fox was feeling a bit lethargic and wasn't playing at his best. It was good, well-natured game but we lost 5-3.

Urban-cub has been on a course today. She obviously finished early as she messaged the Gorse Fox to say she would collect Ellie on the way through, whereas the Gorse Fox had been set to collect her.

He popped along to Sainsbury's to collect a few bits that we needed for tonight. It was clear that the low-IQ locusts had been along. The shelves had been stripped bare of various useless items and were queueing by the trolley that was being used to replenish the empty aisles. The Gorse Fox ignored the panic and completed his normal shopping list (except he forgot the bread!)

Tuesday, March 10, 2020

Cancelled

Well, being Tuesday, and with a modicum of normality returning to the Gorse Fox's joints, he decided to play football again. He should explain that Tuesday's sessions have changed. There used to be two back-to-back sessions for an hour each. Now, they have changed the format. The first session is the standard session, as before. After that comes a session known as "conditioning" and seems a bit loosely defined. Finally, there is a third session called Vets Football which is full-blown blood and guts football and has players of all ages (and not just Vets).

The Gorse Fox played in the first session and we won two out of three games, with two goals from the Gorse Fox. After that, he decided to stay on for the "conditioning" session. Well, "conditioning" this week was basically full-blown football. No pretence of "walking", no worries about physical contact. It was like the good old days. We had a single game, 30 minutes each way. At the end, the Gorse Fox was suitably tired, but content with some good football.

He received an email. The old boys' reunion (50 years) at his old school has been cancelled - or at least, postponed due to Covid-19. He was due to go up to St Albans for the event. Now he has a hotel room but no event. He has suggested to the Silver Vixen that we go and have a quiet evening away and find a nice restaurant in St Albans for dinner.

Talking of cancellations, Betty and Barney Rubble have decided, after all, not to join the cruise next year. It will just be us and J&T.

Success

It was a gorgeous morning. Almost cloudless and pleasantly warm. Perfect.

The Gorse Fox had a football tournament to play in. He made his way across to Worthing and waited as the players gathered. In the end the expected 2 teams from Worthing turned out to be be 1 team, and the other two teams were both ours.

The first game was between our alternate team and Worthing. They won that 4-2. Then we played our  team and beat them 2-0; finally we played the Worthing team an beat them 1-0. So it was very successful, with the Gorse Fox’s team coming first, the alternate Arun team coming second, and Worthing last. It was very nice because the teams were all pretty relaxed and showed none of the aggression and anger that made the wider tournaments so unpleasant.

The Silver Vixen, meanwhile, went and raided Haskins and Urban-Cub was out until late afternoon. The weather collapsed a bit during the afternoon and as the Gorse Fox writes this it is raining again.

Rain dance

It’s Sunday. The Gorse Fox is committed to football. It had started with a fright. The Gorse Fox woke and glanced at his watch and panicked at the thought that it was 8:15. It wasn’t. It was 7:15, there was no need to be concerned,

When he did go to football he was again on a team that was clearly on a hiding to nothing. All of the mobile, attackers wer on the yellow team. The Gorse Fox was on the orange team. By half-time the honours were even at 4-4. Though the Gorse Fox scored in the second half, it wasn’t enough and we ended up losing 7-5.

Once home the Urban-Cub and Ellie headed off to spend the afternoon with Cousteau-Cub. The went to a place that provided trampolines for playing on. From all the reports Ellie loved it. It does sound like a great experience.

Meanwhile, the Silver Vixen spent the afternoon in the garden, tidying up, and the Gorse Fox cleaned the cars

Grey

After yesterday's bright sunshine, we were coated in wall-to-wall grey cloud today. It was fairly chilly, but at least it was dry.

Ellie had woken up early and was clearly feeling cantankerous. At least there were three of us available to  try and keep her on an even keel. Urban-Cub and the Gorse Fox took her out for a walk to the local swings and then to feed the ducks. Even the ducks were in a mood. They only came across to see us as we prepared to walk away.

Back home and after lunch, Ellie went down for a sleep. Urban-Cub took the opportunity to pop to the shops and then went back to LA to manage a viewing on their house. On her return, she, the Silver Vixen, and Ellie went off to try and buy some new wellies as Ellie's old sparkly ones were getting a bit tight.

The Gorse Fox returned to his study and the task of writing the short annual summaries for future photo books. Some of it was made easier when he located his old "day books" from when he was working. He has these stretching back into the mid 90's, though was only interested in the 2000-2004 period for this little project. Actually, they only helped by narrowing down when certain projects were running, which helped him pinpoint some of the other events and locations for the years in question.

Claim

The Gorse Fox had to react to the loss of Flybe. As he explained yesterday, Barclaycard made contact to point him at the correct information. He duly printed off the claim form, filled it in, and printed off all the requisite support information. Envelope duly stuffed and addressed, the Gorse Fox dropped it in the post.

With the claim under way he turned his focus on re-booking the flights. It was an interesting exercise. Trying to book directly with BA or EasyJet resulted in some stupid prices. Booking the same flights through Expedia reduced the price significantly. In fact, it halved the BA price!

This afternoon the Gorse Fox and Silver Vixen made the most of the bright sunshine and went for a walk along the esplanade in Bognor Regis. It really was a lovely stroll, punctuated by a stop at the Lobster Pot for a cup of tea, and a raspberry and coconut slice.

The sun ducked behind a cloud as we set off to return and the temperature change was quite noticeable, but once the cloud cover melted away it was very pleasant again.

Precise précis

The weather today has been foul. Urban-cub and Ellie were expecting the Portsmouth Princess and son Jack. It was nice to see them again, the last time being in 2017 (and Jack may not even have been born then). After some play, they disappeared off to a nearby children's play centre.

The Silver Vixen went to see Lady Penelope. They are off to Madeira at the weekend and they needed a bit of a catch-up before they leave. The Gorse Fox stayed at home. He spent the time working on the annual précis that he uses to preface each new year of the photo books. It was intriguing work and he has a rough outline for each year from 2000 through to 2019. He will refine them, but it has made a good start.

Talking of photo books, the latest, 1995-1999 arrived this morning. He is very pleased with the results and looks forward to compiling the next 5-year section.

The Gorse Fox played around with his new camera today. He is now very happy that all of the various ways in which he can transfer photos from the camera to the iPhone or iPad are successfully carrying the geo-tags with the images.

Bad News, Good News

Well, the airline Flybe has gone out of business overnight. This must be devastating news for its employees and suppliers. It is also bad news for the Gorse Fox and Silver Vixen. We have Flybe tickets booked and paid for our flights to Edinburgh in the summer. The Gorse Fox will need to see what we can do to recoup the money and book alternative tickets.

Late afternoon the Gorse Fox got some good news. Barclaycard texted him to acknowledge the fact that he purchased the airline tickets using their card, and encouraged him to contact them about sorting things out. He was impressed. Now there's plenty of things that could still go wrong between now and us getting a refund, but the Gorse Fox feels a lot better about it now than he did this morning.

Snapped

The Gorse Fox decided against football today. He stayed back and got on with a few more household tasks - most importantly trying to find a solution or supplier for our bathroom cupboard mirror-door. This failed a while back - but finding a replacement set of hinges is proving to be a nightmare. In then he has found a possible supplier in Chichester and has sent him the dimensions and a series of photos showing the problem and what was needed. He awaits a response with breath suitably bated.

This afternoon, later than he had hoped, UPS arrived clutching the Gorse Fox's new camera. It goes without saying that the battery needed charging before it could be used so it was too late for the Gorse Fox to take it down to the beach to take some test shots (which had been his plan).

The camera is much smaller than his old one but seems very well built. He has downloaded the instruction manual and will spend some time going through that tonight.

Seismic

The Silver Vixen obviously has a seismic effect on more than just the Gorse Fox. It appears, from the Daily Mail that one of the cliffs in Sidmouth collapsed (in distress) since we left.

Busy bee

The Gorse Fox has been busy. The Karcher was retrieved from the "man cave" and all the hard floors were cleaned. This doesn't actually take too long in itself, it is the moving and replacing of the furniture that takes the time. Next on the agenda was the loose tap in the kitchen. The Gorse Fox has been avoiding this as it is an absolute beast to get to the fixings. The cupboard was emptied and the Gorse Fox edged his way in, lying on his back. There is only room for one hand near the screw/nut but with perseverance he managed to get everything tightened. He was on a roll.

The Silver Vixen has been wanting some kitchen cupboards adapted to use drawers rather than shelves so that it is easier to see and access the contents. Drawers were selected and ordered.

Then the doorbell rang. It was DHL with the gimbal that the Gorse Fox ordered for his birthday. This was unboxed and charged while he started watching various YouTube videos to understand how it works. It does seem quite straightforward but, no doubt, with some practice it will be as easy as falling off a log.

That's Better

It seemed strange having the house to ourselves this morning. The Gorse Fox headed out for his Sunday morning football and the Silver Vixen stayed put in splendid isolation.

Football went well. The Gorse Fox thinks this was only the second win of the year. The score became a bit of a blur, but he thinks it was about 10-7. For a change, he managed to get on the score sheet with 4 goals, one of which was a penalty. Shame he wasn't playing for Spurs this afternoon!

The Silver Vixen has spent the afternoon snuggled up to her sewing machine while the Gorse Fox has been a) reviewing possible sightseeing tours for the Norwegian Cruise in 2021, and b) doing some more work on the photobook for 1995-99. Both were great fun, but now it's time to finish cooking dinner. All data is saved and checked!
