Plan B

Ellie stayed with us overnight. She had been quite unwell but was feeling a bit better by the time she came downstairs this morning. In fact, by lunchtime, she was back to her normal self, which is quite convenient as she starts back to school tomorrow.

We had a quiet morning. Ellie was engrossed with her dolls and her iPad. Diane had things to do before returning to the sewing, and I returned to the coding exercise I had started yesterday.

I mentioned a Plan B in yesterday's blog.  Overnight, it crystallised in my mind, and I realised it was a much better solution overall. I spent a couple of hours rewriting several parts of the program and then ran it against the old (ancient) letters and documents. It worked beautifully, and now these documents can be formatted and dropped into the document management system. This led me on to some other cryptic document formats that I have used over the years. These were more mainstream, and by installing LibreOffice, I was able to format these and drop them into the hopper for addition to files. There is still one format that I cannot find a way to format, and after various queries on Google, I have been unable to identify a working converter (though I found several that don't work). I may have to examine these files in more detail and see if I can decode the directives so that I can write something myself. That can wait for now.

Zoe collected Ellie soon after 16:00. She has a couple of days off, so will be able to take Ellie to school to start the new year.
