Dock Strikes

After another peaceful and relaxed start to the day, we had the excitement of the weekly shopping raid on Sainsbury's. I don't know if the bright sun is keeping them in their lairs, but there was no sign of the usual zombies shuffling down the aisles. It was a remarkably smooth experience.

Before I retired, I was asked to present to IBM's Architects and IT Specialists on my view of the architect's job in 5 years. I started by explaining that whatever the job would be, I wouldn't be doing it as I was retiring soon. I then went on to discuss various aspects of the job and predicted that many of the boring tasks would be removed by containerisation of components and the deployment of pre-built, pre-tested building blocks (like building with Lego).

I saw a document management application discussed in the technical press this week. I thought that this might be a useful addition to the "West Sussex Data Centre" (my study). It turns out that this application is delivered using a containerised delivery mechanism called Docker. I read up about Docker and found that, along with Kubernetes, it is the realisation of my predictions way back when! I prepared "barnowl" and downloaded the Docker container and went about the configuration (with assistance from ChatGPT). The theory was simple, and the installation should have been easy. In fact, it was a nightmare, and I spent all day trying to wrestle it into action. I exhausted my ChatGPT query allowance for the day and switched over to Google's Gemini. By the end of the afternoon, I gave up and will reset "barnowl" and start again tomorrow. The docks certainly were on strike. (The frustrating part is that I can see how easy it should be.)
