The Gorse Fox woke up with code on his mind. There used to be a wonderful utility in VM/CMS called "WAKEUP". This was a simple event handler that would sit and wait for some defined event to occur then return control to the program. Events could be external interrupts of various kinds, or pre-defined events that were coded into a simple schedule file. It always seemed to form the basis of so many of the utilities that the Gorse Fox would write.
The need for a scheduler, though simply satisfied by the UNIX "cron" job as an interim, never quite seemed as sophisticated or powerful. SO it was that the Gorse Fox spent the first part of the morning refreshing his memory regarding the ins and outs of WAKEUP. Then it was left to fester.
The Silver Vixen had an appointment in Chichester. The Gorse Fox took her along and kept her company. It was most interesting and quite astounding what can be done nowadays. Anyway, all seems well and we were soon back home.
Urban-Cub popped in for a chat on her way back from work and joined us for lunch. The Gorse Fox retired to the study afterwards and has spent a little while crafting the first few bits of a new Wakeup routine that he can use on the Raspberry Pis, Ubuntu server, Mint laptops, or the Macs (it would also work on Windows if we ever booted the Windows laptop that's tucked away somewhere).
