Passing Highden Beeches the route started to loop south. To the right was Cobden Farm. This appeared to the be source of the sporadic gunfire.
It had become more frequent as the crack of the firearms played a paradiddle on the rural idyll(*)
GF wondered if it was actually paintballing.
Never having tried it he wasn't sure what the sound would be like. He mused that, tucked in this fold of the South Downs, it would be the ideal training camp for terrorist painters and decorators. Having completed their training they can then merge back into the community (like a sleeper cell) and emerge when called upon with paint kettle and brush to spread magnolia in the hearts of the innocent civilians.
(*)Try saying that quickly!
