Further experimentation has made the Gorse Fox realise that the suspect tapes, which had apparently faded, may be ok after all. He would guess that the process of rewinding the tapes leaves some slight static charge, and that by removing the tape from the player, and re-inserting it it then plays just fine in glorious colour. GF is, therefore, re-capturing the tapes form yesterday.
