Inured - Paradox

Now and then one of life's little paradoxes jumps up and forces its way into GF's consciousness.

We appear to be told, repeatedly, that violence on TV, in movies and in computer games does no harm; that it does not affect those who watch it. GF disputes this fact

  • If tearjerkers make people cry, why should films that glorify violence or depravity not change the mood to the person watching?
  • If youngsters watch soccer, they go out and play soccer. That affected them.
  • If youngsters watch motor racing, they go out and charge around on their bikes. That affected them.
  • If you watch a good comedy, you feel happy. That affected you.
  • If you watch "The Office" you prabably want to smack David Brent in the mouth. That affected you.
  • If you see a gorgeous person, you may even feel aroused. That affected you.
There appears to have been a vast rise in violent crimes over the past 20 or 30 years. Excuses are given that this is because of better recording, and wider reportiing. GF believes it is because susceptible people are becoming inured to violence and psychologically brutalised by the constant images. This blurs the edges of film and reality.

Finally, if these images do not affect the watcher... why do companies spend so much money on advertising?

  • Because advertising affects the watcher.
  • Ahh, but advertising isn't real!
  • Well neither is the violence and depravity of films/TV/games.

Sorry, you can't have it both ways!!
