And so we headed to Stratfield Turgis to the Wellington Arms. Other guests had already started to arrive and so we checked in and went to get changed. We then gathered in the function room where we we greeted by the aging hosts and a tray of champagne.
We met up with various friends of Betty and Barney Rubble - some we had met before and several that we hadn't - it was very sociable. We sat down to dine and were pleasantly surprised by how good the service, the food and the presentation were - particularly as we were a fairly large party. After the first couple of courses all the men were instructed to move round to the next table to ensure that everybody mixed. This worked well.
After the sweet course Gorse Fox was asked to stand up and deliver his few words, and so began a brief dissertation - in verse - covering the salient points of our friendship and their extreme age. After coffees there was a quiz about their (long) life... and then we chatted on into the night. We gave up and went to bed soon after 1am - but others carried on for a while more.
Excellent night all round.
