Trust

So, earlier this week Sir Alistair Graham, chairman of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, warned that public trust in the government had not recovered since the Iraq war. Yesterday New Cabinet Secretary Sir Gus O'Donnell has added to the debate:
"But where I strongly agree with Alistair is that on this business of trust I think it's one of these things we need to keep working on. How can we enhance trust?"

"I'll be looking for ways to improve trust in the public sector."

Let the Gorse Fox help you Gus:
  • For MPs
    • Immediately sack all spin doctors.
    • Stop lying, prevaricating, & misrepresenting. Tell the truth.
    • Stop treating me like an idiot - I probably have a much higher IQ than you do.
    • Call a Tax a Tax
    • Tax all MP's perks, jaust as our citizens' perks are taxed.
    • Ensure that all MP travel expenses are fully receipted.
    • Answer the question asked, not the question you want asked.
    • Put you hands up and say "I was wrong", when you are wrong
    • Agree with another "Party" if they have a good idea.
    • Give the English the same rights as the Scots and Welsh.
    • Allow us the freedom of speech that our fathers and grandfathers have fought for.
    • Remember you work for me, not the other way round.
    • Don't patronise me - tell me the pros and cons you considered, and the reason you made a final decision.
  • For Civil Servants
    • Have the occasional public or judicial enquiry that actually finds "against" the government.
    • Do NOT under any circumstances be browbeaten by politicians
    • If you are told to do something stupid by a senior official, have the guts to tell him it's stupid.
    • Remember that every penny you waste was given to you under duress by a tax payer.
    • Waste is not only caused by material things, it is also caused by: delaying necessary projects, too many people attending meetings unnecessarily, not making decisions, being anally retentive over pennies whilst squandering millions.
  • For Local Councils
    • Eliminate corruption
    • Stop making perverse planning and development ddecisions
    • Stop penalising Pensioners with Council tax demands that outstrip the rate at which the State Pension increases
    • Stop the spread of revenue generating "speed" cameras - whilst encouraging the growth of genuine "safety" cameras.
    • If you publicise a "Consuiltation Exercise" - then consult. (A recent case in point is the local use of Speed Cameras that has delayed a Consiultation Exercise until it has received the go ahead from the Minister to deploy its cameras in the locations selected - some consultation that'll be!!!
