It looks like the problem on the PC was a built-in multi-card reader. This was meant to allow various CF, SD and the like cards to be inserted and read. It appears that the system was getting controller errors from it (according to the system log), and so (as the Gorse Fox has only used this feature about three times in the past few years) he has disabled it et voila la ordinateur is live.
