Winchester Cathedral

Some images of Winchester Cathedral.
This is a fascinating Cathedral built on the site of an old Saxon Minster which dates back to the 7th Century.

The Cathedral as we see it now was started in 1079. The Gorse Fox loves the archhitecture of the great Cathedrals, and particularly the use of these flying buttresses, which seem almost decorative, but have the important job of preventing the walls from spreading under the weight of the roof.

Early in the last century, caused the diver William Walker and 250 others undertook the extraordinary task of underpinning the foundations with concrete, so saving the cathedral from considerable risk of subsidence.

On this view is a sundial that GF had never noticed before. To see it, you may need to look at the full size picture. The dial is on a diagonal line from top left to bottom right, on a small square tower just north west of the centre point.

Aren't the various angles and juxtapositions of roof lines and walls just incredible.
